Five sons of the artist John White served in the First World War. Four (Peter, Melville, Lawrence and Leicester) joined the British Army, while Robert, who was in Australia when war broke out, joined the Australian Army.
All five survived the war, although Robert was wounded twice, losing an arm on the second occasion. He fought at Fromelles, where the Australians suffered extremely heavy casualties, while Melville and Peter both fought at Gallipoli.
