Walter Cawley was born in Beer in 1899. At the time of the 1911 census Walter was aged 12, still at school, and living at home with his parents, Henry, a merchant seaman, and Rose. He had two sisters, Bessie (14) and Lily (7), and a younger brother, named Prince Edward Cawley, who was ten. Their address was given as 65 Main Street, Beer.
The 1919 Absent Voters’ List records Walter as a Private in the 2/6th Devonshire Regiment. As Walter could not have been called up until he turned 18, i.e. in 1917, this battalion would by that time have been serving in Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq).
Walter died in 1924, aged 25.
