James Bond was born in Beer on 23rd September 1875, the son of Joseph Bond, a fisherman, and his wife Harriet.
He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 29th January 1899, and his RNR record describes him as 5ft 5 ½ ins tall, with brown eyes and a dark complexion. At the time he was employed fishing out of Beer, and lived at 1 Dolphin Road.
James was called up on 3rd August 1914, and after a period of illness he joined HMS Columbine, the submarine depot at Port Edgar on the Firth of Forth, and remained until November 1915.
He also served on the brand new HMS Ramillies, a Revenge class battleship with a crew of 936, and ended the war aboard HMS Orbita, an armed merchant cruiser on the North America and West Indies station.
