Plan for Memorial Avenue in Beer
The Beer 2014 group, whose research is recorded on this website, plans to create an avenue of trees in Beer's clifftop car park, overlooking Lyme Bay. If the plan is successful, an avenue of 30 trees will run parallel to a stretch of the South West Coast Path. Twenty eight of the trees will each be dedicated to one of the men from Beer who died in the First World War, while the remaining two will serve as a tribute to all those from the village who served an returned. A hard-surface path will make the avenue accessible to wheelchairs, even when the ground is wet, and benches will be sited within the avenue. The area among the trees will be planted with hundreds of snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and bluebells, and a narrow striop of grassland along the seaward side of the avenue will be sown with wild flowers, including poppies and cornflowers, the British and French flowers of remembrance.
